What I've read lately O.o

I won this. I hadn't planned on buying it, but eventually borrowing it from someone. I COULD NOT put this down. I read it every chance until I finished it. AAH-MAZING book!

I enjoyed this book for its story. It was cute. I was not expecting certain things... ie., trolls! But it was a completely adorable YA. I'm not a big YA fan anymore, but I grabbed this for a quick read and was surprised!

Yasmine Galenorn just pushes all my reading love buttons. She completely envelopes me whenever I jump into her worlds. I can't ever get enough of them. I continuously want more and more. I am always amazed by how fast her books come out and how wonderful they always are.

Also, I have been listening to audio books at work. This week I am in the middle of the Chronicles of Elantra by Michelle Sagara. I unfortunately can't listen to things I haven't read already, but I thoroughly love this series. And the narration is amazing... I am really too picky about it, but justice is done with this series!!

FREE Two Days Only: A Vampire Novel with Actual Bite!

As the modern world establishes itself and pushes the supernatural into the shadows, the supernatural fights back.

The Darkening Dream is a chilling new dark fantasy novel by Andy Gavin, creator of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter, that has received rave reviews on Amazon and Goodreads and is FREE for two days only on Amazon Kindle (February 7th to 8th)!

Download your FREE copy here: http://amzn.to/yTvZPG

Long-time readers of dark historical fantasy (Tim Powers, Guy Gavriel Kay, Katherine Kurtz) will appreciate the weaving together of mythology, occult, and religion, while younger readers and fans of HBO dramas (True Blood, Carnivàle) or urban fantasy (Laurell K. Hamilton, Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher) will be drawn to the twisted imagination, graphic action, and romantic tension.

About The Darkening Dream

Even as the modern world pushes the supernatural aside in favor of science and steel, the old ways remain. God, demon, monster, and sorcerer alike plot to regain what was theirs.

1913, Salem, Massachusetts – Sarah Engelmann’s life is full of friends, books, and avoiding the pressure to choose a husband, until an ominous vision and the haunting call of an otherworldly trumpet shake her. When she stumbles across a gruesome corpse, she fears that her vision was more of a premonition. And when she sees the murdered boy moving through the crowd at an amusement park, Sarah is thrust into a dark battle she does not understand.

With the help of Alex, an attractive Greek immigrant who knows a startling amount about the undead, Sarah sets out to uncover the truth. Their quest takes them to the factory mills of Salem, on a midnight boat ride to spy on an eerie coastal lair, and back, unexpectedly, to their own homes. What can Alex’s elderly, vampire-hunting grandfather and Sarah’s own rabbi father tell them? And what do Sarah’s continuing visions reveal?

No less than Gabriel’s Trumpet, the tool that will announce the End of Days, is at stake, and the forces that have banded to recover it include a 900 year-old vampire, a trio of disgruntled Egyptian gods, and a demon-loving Puritan minister. At the center of this swirling cast is Sarah, who must fight a millennia-old battle against unspeakable forces, knowing the ultimate prize might be her very soul.

The Reviews Are In

"A vampire novel with actual bite." ~The Kirkus Reviews

"Mr. Gavin has brought something refreshingly new to a genre now suffused with poorly-concealed bodice-rippers which have more in common with Fabio than Bram Stoker: depth. His big baddies are scary, not romantic interests, and the added religious lore is complex and engaging. Don't expect another Twilight -- the story can get downright creepy, so be prepared for a return to the old horror sensibilities of supernatural fiction." ~Amazon Review

"With Mr. Gavin's video-game pedigree, I was expecting something aimed squarely at the 18-25 year old fanboy contingent; what I got in The Darkening Dream was something wholly unexpected: A period novel with a female protagonist, a crash-course on Judaism in the colonial years, and multi-layered series of plot arcs featuring a crazy cast of natural and supernatural characters populating 18th Century Colonial America." ~Amazon Review

"…A perfect blend of mystery, magic and myth. A grown-up Grimm's fairy tale...emphasis on grim."  ~Amazon Review

First Middle Grade Review! SCARY SCHOOL!

WoW!! I am back after a long break of blogging!! And I come now with a few reviews in the works!

I will start today with my first Middle Grade Review. Now, I normally don't read much YA, or even younger levels than that. But after reading about this book, I had to accept.

Let me start with the author, Derek the Ghost, with a Q&A with him!

Derek the ghost:

What made you decide writing about Scary School was your "final act", so to speak?

Well, I would actually consider it my first act since becoming a ghost since I realized I was meant to become a writer post-mortem when I found myself unable to leave the Scary School grounds until I started writing about all the spine-tingling, hilarious things that go on there.

How long did it take you to figure out that writing down the goings on's of the school was it?

When I became a ghost, I couldn't write anymore with a pen and paper because my ghostly hands go straight through solid, earthly matter. But, I found a ghost pad and a ghost pen right away that I could use (the ghost pad never runs out of paper and the ghost pen never runs out of ink), and I realized that I was supposed to use those items to write down everything that happens at Scary School so all the kids of the world could learn about this amazing school that's never, EVER boring.

Is it possible for me, as a non-ghost, to get my hands on these cool ghost pads/pens? I really want them!

I'm afraid the only way a living person would able to experience those items would be to pay a visit to the ghost dimension, which you will learn all about in Book 3 of Scary School that comes out in June of 2013!

Derek Kent, the ghost whisperer that hears it all!:

It takes a certain type of person to write for a young audience and grab their attention, were you nervous about writing for them?

Not really, because I've always been young at heart and have been working with and entertaining kids my whole life. When I was in middle school, i was a bit of a class clown and loved making all my friends laugh. I guess I just never stopped enjoying making kids that age laugh. Later in life I performed in children's theater productions and ran drama at a bunch of camps, where we would put on funny plays that had all the kids in stitches, so I guess making kids laugh is what I was born to do.

Have you always wanted to be an author? Particularly, a middle grade author?

I've always wanted to be a comedy writer since I was seven years old. That manifests itself in many different forms. I write screenplays, which are definitely for more of an adult audience. I also have a production company called Sad Ninja Comedy (SadNinja.com) that produces funny sketches, music videos, and commercials - also for more of an adult audience. But I've also been writing children's books very seriously since I was 15 years old. I was pretty obsessed with Dr. Seuss and then later on, Harry Potter, and I had a deep need to create magical worlds like JK Rowling did. Because of my inherent comedic sensibilities, the books took on a much more humorous tone, but I very much enjoy the middle-grade genre because one of the main goals is to create FUN, so that kids will enjoy reading their first chapter books, and hopefully spark a life-long love of it.

What gave you the idea for Scary School?

The first novel I had written was originally called SCARY SCHOOL: BOOK 1 - MY HOMEWORK ATE MY DOG!  - it's a middle-grade fantasy series very similar to Harry Potter. The only problem was, it didn't have a whole lot to do with a "scary school". I just thought of that title and wanted to use it before someone else did. So my editor at HarperCollins read the book, and almost acquired it, but in the end, they ended up passing on it, but gave me the recommendation to write a book series called SCARY SCHOOL that was lighter, funnier, and more school-centric. I took their advice, which became the Scary School series we know today.

The original book ended up becoming RUDY AND THE BEAST: BOOK 1 - MY HOMEWORK ATE MY DOG! which is available exclusively through my website at http://www.scaryschool.com/bookstore.html  - and you can get it on Kindle (just $2.99!) or paperback! For those who like dark fantasies like Harry Potter, I've gotten many responses that young readers enjoy it even more than Scary School!

What is the worst school memory have and did it play a part in Scary School?

My worst school memory was when I started at a new school in the 7th grade after being with the same group of friends from kindergarten through 6h grade. I didn't know anybody at my new school and was very lonely and scared and had a hard time making new friends because I had never had to do that before. That experience plays a HUGE role in both RUDY AND THE BEAST and SCARY SCHOOL. Scary School starts off with young Charles Nukid entering Scary School as a new kid and having to go through not only the usual struggles of making new friends and learning all the rules of the new school, but also having to find out just how he's going to survive the scariest school in the world, where a teacher just might gobble you up if you break a rule! Every kid whose ever had to start at a new school should be able to relate to poor Charles Nukid, and hopefully this book will put things into perspective for them that things could be much worse!

What was your favorite school lunch? Mine was always turkey and gravy, I think it was magic because I can't even look at it now! O.o

My favorite was Pizza Day every Thursday. My class would sell the pizzas to raise money, and as part of the student council, I was in charge of the sales. I had a lot of fun selling those pizzas. I do the same exact thing at book shows now when I'm trying to sell my books! Little known fact: if you slab a little mustard on them, my books are surprisingly delicious.

When you were in middle school, what types of books did you read? I think I had Sabriel by Nix permanently checked out of our library for years!

I remember the first books I thought were hilarious were Sideways Stories from Wayside School and Dr. Doolittle. I also loved Swiss Family Robinson, the Choose Your Own Adventure books, and a series called Two Minute Mysteries.  One of my biggest early comedy influences was also Calvin and Hobbes. I miss them so much.

If you'd like to add any questions or anything else for that matter, feel free!

I'd just like to take this time to thank all the awesome fans of Scary School who have written to me through the website - ScarySchool.com - and have such nice things to say. For those not familiar, make sure to visit the website and see if you can find all the easter eggs! There's a fun game you can play, and if you beat the game, you will win the weirdest trophy ever! You can also tour the school, meet the students, and read the secret last chapter of the book if you look carefully.

And to remind everyone, Scary School #2 - Monsters on the March comes out on June 26 of this year! If you follow us on Facebook or Twitter @DerektheGhost - you'll get all the latest updates and hear all the funny musings of that wacky Derek the Ghost

You think your school's scary?

Get a load of these teachers:

Ms. Fang, an 850-year-old vampire
Dr. Dragonbreath, who just might eat you before recess
Mr. Snakeskin—science class is so much more fun when it's taught by someone who's half zombie
Mrs. T—break the rules and spend your detention with a hungry Tyrannosaurus rex!

Plus

Gargoyles, goblins, and Frankenstein's monster on the loose The world's most frighteningly delicious school lunch

And

The narrator's an eleven-year-old ghost!

Join Charles "New Kid" Nukid as he makes some very Scary friends—including Petunia, Johnny, and Peter the Wolf—and figures out that Scary School can be just as funny as it is spooky!

I will honestly say this book had me laughing out loud. It is exactly the type of book I would have devoured at age 9. It was fun, quirky and had just enough references, that I, as an adult, was completely entertained. In trying to keep with the thought process of a nine year old, I kept thinking back to what I actually read at that age, and I couldn't think of anything that had me giggling so much! The characters were odd and eccentric and kept you on your toes! Especially the teachers! Mrs. T totally reminded me of my fifth grade math teacher. The whole school was weird and yet oddly I could relate to it with some memories. Hehe. I would recommend this to any of my friends with children 8+ (7 or so if read together).

Banned Books Week

It's Banned Books Week!

Did you know, on average, one book everyday gets challenged or banned from a school or public library in the United States?

Did you know that that censorship is completely against what the US is supposed to stand for?
Don't get me wrong, I think, when it comes to younger people, there are types of media they are not ready to read/view. But to take the option away from everyone? Wrong. Just wrong. It is my right as an adult to decide what I want to read or watch or hear. And it is my job as a PARENT to know what content it available to my kids.
I read my first fantasy book when I was 7 years old. People died. There was magic. It was most likely a little too old for me. But I understood it for what it was, fiction, pretend, imagination.
My first banned book was Harry Potter. I read the first when it first came out. I was 12 years old (that was in 1999, whew that makes me feel old LOL). I knew that it wasn't real. I knew the difference. My future children will read that and more.
I will agree that not all books belong in the hands of children due to content. But that's MY choice to make. Not a PUBLIC Library's.
There is so much to learn from books, books can effect you and your life in many many ways. I could never tell someone not to read a book about <insert something> because I didn't like it, I thought it was too graphic, or any religious reasons. It's against that persons rights to take options away from them.

For more information on banned books visit ALA's new website.

Total SLACKER!!

Well, I've been completely slacking on the blog front. I'm sorry. Between building a website, yard work, house work, summer time, AND trying to enjoy some book time, I've had no time.

But I have managed to fry my brain with html code and forget to actually know how to do things... like blog about books! So, becuase I haven't been keeping up with this blog, I am going to do a recap of what I've read in the past few weeks.

Game of Thrones by George RR Martin. Loved it. Total epic fantasy at its finest!! And the series!! Oh my, it was so refreshing to not hate the series!!

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. I was a bit disappointed with the book to TV series, but the book was highly entertaining.

Dark Awakening by Kendra Leigh Castle. I LOVED this book. I love vampires, but the media is completely playing them out. This book was a very good vampire book!! A must-read!!

Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire. I liked this book. It was an interesting story. Different view on the fae... Now reading #2 :D

WOOOOO!! Go NEW YORK STATE!!!

ALBANY — New York lawmakers narrowly voted to legalize same-sex marriage Friday, handing activists a breakthrough victory in the state where the gay rights movement was born.
New York will become the sixth state where gay couples can wed and the biggest by far.
“We are leaders and we join other proud states that recognize our families and the battle will now go on in other states,” said Sen. Thomas Duane, a Democrat.
Gay rights advocates are hoping the vote will galvanize the movement around the country and help it regain momentum after an almost identical bill was defeated here in 2009 and similar measures failed in 2010 in New Jersey and this year in Maryland and Rhode Island.
Though New York is a relative latecomer in allowing gay marriage, it is considered an important prize for advocates, given the state’s size and New York City’s international stature and its role as the birthplace of the gay rights movement, which is considered to have started with the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village in 1969.
The New York bill cleared the Republican-controlled state Senate on a 33-29 vote. The Democrat-led Assembly, which passed a different version last week, is expected to pass the new version with stronger religious exemptions and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who campaigned on the issue last year, has promised to sign it. Same-sex couples can begin marrying begin 30 days after that.
The passage of New York’s legislation was made possible by two Republican senators who had been undecided.
Sen. Stephen Saland voted against a similar bill in 2009, helping kill the measure and dealing a blow to the national gay rights movement.
“While I understand that my vote will disappoint many, I also know my vote is a vote of conscience,” Saland said in a statement to The Associated Press before the vote. “I am doing the right thing in voting to support marriage equality.”
Gay couples in gallery wept during Saland’s speech.
Sen. Mark Grisanti, a GOP freshman from Buffalo, also said he would vote for the bill. Grisanti said he could not deny anyone what he called basic rights.
The effects of the law could be felt well beyond New York: Unlike Massachusetts, which pioneered gay marriage in 2004, New York has no residency requirement for obtaining a marriage license, meaning the state could become a magnet for gay couples across the country who want to have a wedding in Central Park, the Hamptons, the romantic Hudson Valley or that honeymoon hot spot of yore, Niagara Falls.
New York, the nation’s third most populous state, will join Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C., in allowing same-sex couples to wed.
For five months in 2008, gay marriage was legal in California, the biggest state in population, and 18,000 same-sex couples rushed to tie the knot there before voters overturned the state Supreme Court ruling that allowed the practice. The constitutionality of California’s ban is now before a federal appeals court.
While court challenges in New York are all but certain, the state — unlike California — makes it difficult for the voters to repeal laws at the ballot box. Changing the law would require a constitutional convention, a long, drawn-out process.
The sticking point over the past few days: Republican demands for stronger legal protections for religious groups that fear they will be hit with discrimination lawsuits if they refuse to allow their facilities to be used for gay weddings.
The climactic vote came after more than a week of stop-and-start negotiations, rumors, closed-door meetings and frustration on the part of advocates.
Online discussions took on a nasty turn with insults and vulgarities peppering the screens of opponents and supporters alike and security was beefed up in the capitol to give senators easier passage to and from their conference room.
The night before, President Barack Obama encouraged lawmakers to support gay rights during a fundraiser with New York City’s gay community.
The vote also is sure to charge up annual gay pride events this weekend, culminating with parades Sunday in New York City, San Francisco and other cities.
Despite New York City’s liberal Democratic politics and large and vocal gay community, previous efforts to legalize same-sex marriage failed over the past several years, in part because the rest of the state is more conservative than the city.
The bill’s success this time reflected the powerful support of Cuomo and perhaps a change in public attitudes. Opinion polls for the first time are showing majority support for same-sex marriage, and Congress recently repealed the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that barred gays from serving openly in the military.
In the week leading up to the vote in New York, some Republicans who opposed the bill in 2009 came forward to say they were supporting it for reasons of conscience and a duty to ensure civil rights.
Pressure to vote for gay marriage also came from celebrities, athletes and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the Republican-turned-independent who has long used his own fortune to help bankroll GOP campaigns and who personally lobbied some undecided lawmakers. Lady Gaga has been urging her 11 million Twitter followers to call New York senators in support of the bill.
While the support of the Assembly was never in doubt, it took days of furious deal-making to secure two Republican votes needed for passage in the closely divided Senate.
Representatives of the Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox rabbis and other conservative religious leaders fought the measure, and their GOP allies pressed hard for stronger legal protections for religious organizations.
Each side of the debate was funded by more than $1 million from national and state advocates who waged media blitzes and promised campaign cash for lawmakers who sided with them.
But GOP senators said it was Cuomo’s passionate appeals in the governor’s mansion on Monday night and in closed-door, individual meetings that were perhaps most persuasive.
The bill makes New York only the third state, after Vermont and New Hampshire, to legalize marriage through a legislative act and without being forced to do so by a court.

Can I just say, finally?!

Today's Review!!

So I couldn't quite decide on which book to review today. My brain might still possibly be a tad mushy from the weekend. So I'm doing a whole series! hehe

The Demonica Series by @LarissaIone

What can I say... This series rocked! I was totally non functioning while reading these books! The world building, characters, romance, adventures... ALL A-MAZ-ING. While all hell breaks loose in these characters lives, they still hold true to themselves and keep right on going. Underworld General, which brings all of this together IMHO, is the BEST! This is the type of series that makes you really wonder, "what if this is all real?". The romance is roller coastered just enough to keep you tied into it, but each adventure and twist is completely compelling. Hope to see more and more of these characters in the new series she writes!

Halfway Hexed by Kimberly Frost

First, there are the local residents who form a scripture-spouting posse and kidnap Tammy to "defend" Duvall, Texas, against witchcraft. Next, someone saddles her with a secret package chock full of dangerous visions, just as the president of WAM-the World Association of Magic- arrives with his entourage to investigate her. And who worse to examine Tammy's entanglement with off-limits and drop-dead gorgeous wizard Bryn Lyons than his ex-girlfriend? Not to mention that the clash between the locals and the magical visitors leads to a series of unnatural disasters that may doom them all.
While the fate of the town hangs in the balance, one thing's certain: this would-be witch is ready to rumble, Texas style.

Tammy Jo is still learning her new powers and about herself. The newest witch in a town that knows nothing of the magical world struggles to find her place in it, both the town and the magical world. When the president of the magical community makes a unprecedented arrival to the little town and reaps all sorts of havoc, including trying to buy the whole town, its up to Tammy Jo to rescue her town and the people in it. Along with finding herself in some pretty serious trouble too! Her wayward ways and total lack of knowledge make this story completely compelling and of course who could forget the TOTALLY smexy Bryn Lyons. Tammy and Bryn are so entwined she doesn't know how to stay away! Even though she's supposed to! Doing the impossible in this book is what its all about. With major surprises as she learns more of the truth about herself and the reasons Bryn Lyons is off limits, Tammy Jo never ceases to amaze! Loved, loved, loved this series! Can not wait for the next book!!

Super busy day, but here's today's review!!

The gates of hell have opened, and one woman will stand in the crossfire as the Dark Breed -- vampyre, demons, shape shifters -- and mankind fight their last battle for survival.

Kyana is half Vampyre, half Lychen... and the last of her kind. Determined, dangerous, and damned, she has no love for the mortals who have imprisoned and misused her. But when the Order of Ancients entrusts her with a mission -- to find the key that will send the Dark Breed back into Hell for eternity -- Kyana has no choice but to accept.

She is furious to learn her assignment comes with an escort... Ryker, a demigod and fierce warrior who long ago found a way under her skin and stayed there. In a shaky alliance, they discover an ancient cult with dangerous motive and a god who seeks to destroy all others. And as Kyana begins to feel the heat that threatens to bind her to Ryker, she knows she has to resist. For it could only mean the undoing of them both...

Awesome debut novel that has an amazing start to a series!

Giving a whole new spin on the apocalypse, Sable Grace entertains and enthralls with Ascension. Kyana, Dark Breed, protector, and smart alec, rushes in to an assignment she never expects. An assignment that will pair her up with her best friend, favorite-ish colleague and a super hot ex-fling, that she's still not over... The assignment, given to her by the Fates, takes her on a journey where she finds her limits and herself, only to lose some important stuff and gain things she never imagined. Light-speed paced all the way through, you will have trouble putting it down. Witty banter and exceptional world building keeps you wanting for more. Excellent read IMHO, can't wait for #2!!

First Grave on the Right by the fabulous Darynda Jones!

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to go into the light. But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

Charley Davidson is a private detective by day and the Grim Reaper by night. Not only do the ghosts frequently wake her up, they want her to give them justice. And she does. Charley is a smidge peeved about being woken up, that's only because she dreams of a smokin' hot mystery, who keeps her wishing she could go back to sleep. But when her justice dealing day job stumbles across some serious danger, its her mystery dream guy who jumps out to save the day, or just be jealous. Charley quickly realizes he may not be a figment of her imagination or a ghost, but someone in need of some serious help and only Charley with the help of some awesome sidekicks, can do it. Absolutely amazing story. Can't wait for the second, Second Grave on the Left!! Darynda Jones has an amazing talent to keep you at the edge of your seat, drooling, begging for more!

When I found this book, I had no idea I would be so completely immersed that I forgot about the real world IE, letting the dogs go potty... Yeah.. I didn't put it down. Not once.

First Review EVAR! Hunt the Moon by Karen Chance!

Cassandra Palmer recently defeated a god, which you'd think would buy a girl a little time off. But it doesn't work that way when your job description is Pythia-the world's chief clairvoyant. Cassie is busier than ever, trying to learn about her power, preparing for her upcoming coronation, and figuring out her relationship with the enigmatic sexy master vampire, Mircea.

But someone doesn't want Cassie to become Pythia, and is willing to go to any lengths to make sure the coronation ceremony never happens- including attacking her mother before Cassie is even born.

Alright, got this the day it came out. Read it before the day was over. Total AWESOMSAUCE! Especially after waiting what seemed to be forever for the next Cassie book. If you haven't read the series it starts with Touch the Dark.

Hunt the Moon started off in typical Karen Chance style, jumping head first right into the story. Cassandra Palmer, world class seer and soon to be crowned Pythia. Known clutz and self proclaimed screw up, Cassie has quite the battle coming to terms with her new position that is still pulling her unwillingly along the timeline.  As always with Karen Chance, you never know what to expect with her characters. Mircea and Cassie's "relationship" has been a bumpy road, with never knowing where she stands and the long lasting tension with Pritkin is finally, sort of, explained. Along with total mishaps and adventures with the amazing Palmer Universe, Hunt the Moon will leave you drooling for more Mircea, or Pritkin, I can never decide which. The cliff hanger at the end is tear jerking, yes, cliff hanger, they are the bane of my existence. If I explain more I will include too many spoilers, and I really, really hate spoilers!

Woo! Newbie here!

Alright, I'm home all day. I read like it's my job (and oh, how I wish it was!). And I read blogs about books. So why not start my own?! Maybe because I'm one blunt biznatch and can't really string words together for long periods of time. BUT I am going to do this. And I am going to try to put a review up everyday. At least one. I hope. Maybe two if you're lucky.
